Arc Flash Risk Assessment

An Arc flash risk assessment is a type of electrical explosion or discharge that results from a low-impedance connection through the air to ground or another voltage phase in an electrical system.

Arc flash temperatures can reach or exceed 35,000 °F (19,400 °C) at the arc terminals. The massive energy released in the fault rapidly vaporizes the metal conductors involved, blasting molten metal and expanding plasma outward with extraordinary force. A typical arc flash incident can be inconsequential but could conceivably easily produce a more severe explosion. The result of the violent event can cause destruction of equipment involved, fire, and injury not only to an electrical worker but also to bystanders. During the arc flash risk assessment, electrical energy vaporizes the metal, which changes from solid-state to gas vapour, expanding it with explosive force.

Arc Flash Risk Assessment

Wire Consultancy offers comprehensive Arc Flash Risk Assessment

We at WIRE, use the tested and proven software ETAP and DIGSILENT to perform short circuit studies and arc flash risk assessment. These assessments meet the new regulation noted on NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, NESC (National electric safety codes), and OSHA.

Studies can be customized to include any and all of the following:

PROCESS OF ARC FLASH RISK ASSESSMENT

Process of Arc Flash Risk Assessment

LOAD FLOW ANALYSIS:

The objective is to perform power flow analysis and voltage drop calculations with accuracy and reliability. In this step, we calculate bus voltages, branch power factors, currents and power losses. Load Flow Analysis allows the user to compare numerous study cases at a glance in detail to perform AC, DC, single- phase and three-phase load flow studies on your network concurrently.

SHORT CIRCUIT ANALYSIS:

Electrical power system consists of various equipment such as generator, transformer, motor, switchgears, capacitors, harmonic filters, cables, etc. Complexity of power system and its components/ equipment can experience failure, no matter how carefully the system/ equipment are designed. These system/ equipment failures manifest themselves as insulation break down, which can result into fault/ short circuits.

ARC FLASH ANALYSIS:

The Arc Flash Risk Assessment used to determine worst case arc flash energy levels. Arc Flash Risk Assessment identifies and analyzes high risk arc flash areas in your electrical power system.
